Job description

Supporting staff with outdoor play, helping with snack, All the general nursery duties, playing with children, feeding them, and reading, creative arts.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Operate a programme of activities suitable to the age range of children in your area in conjunction with other staff.
  2. Keep a full record of achievement file using Tapestry on your key children for Parents/carers.
  3. Work with parents/carers of all children to give full integration in the setting.
  4. Support all staff and engage in a good staff team.
  5. Liaise with and support parents/carers and other family members.
  6. To take part in out of working hours activities e.g. training, monthly staff meetings, charity days.
  7. To be flexible within the working practices of the setting. Be prepared to help where needed, including undertaking certain domestic jobs e.g. preparation of snack, cleaning duties, covering in other rooms etc.
  8. Work alongside the manager and the staff team to ensure that the philosophy behind the business is fulfilled.
  9. Recording accidents in the accident book. Ensure the Room Leader/Manager is aware of the report before the parent receives it.
  10. Look upon the setting at a “whole” where can your help most be utilised, be constantly aware of the needs of the children.
  11. Ensure children are only collected by someone known to the setting.
  12. Respect the confidentiality of any information received.
  13. Develop your role within the team especially with regard as a key worker.
  14. Ensure the setting of a high quality environment to meet the needs of individual children from differing cultures and religious backgrounds and stages of development.
  15. Be aware of the profile of the setting and uphold it’s standards at all times.
  16. Actively promote and support the safeguarding of children and young people in the workplace, ensuring setting policies and procedures are observed at all times.
  17. Specific childcare tasks;
  • The preparation and completion of activities to suit the child’s stage of development.
  • Washing and changing children as required.
  • Providing comfort and warmth to an ill child.
Entry requirements

Applicants must be 17+ due to Child to Adult Ratio requirements.

Maths and English GCSE C or above desirable 

Skills required
  • Previous experience of caring for, or working with children aged 0-5 in a voluntary or paid capacity.
  • An understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage.
  • A commitment to the provision of high quality childcare.
  • A positive approach to learning and gaining new skills through teamwork and training opportunities.
Personal qualities
  • Good organisational, record keeping and planning skills.
  • Punctuality.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Patience.
  • Reliability and trustworthiness.
  • A positive approach to inclusive practice with children and colleagues.
  • Enthusiasm for working with young children.
Qualifications taken
  • Level 2 or 3 QCF in Childcare (depending on current experience) 
  • The importance of Health and Safety and Food Hygiene in the workplace.
  • Safeguarding training course.
  • Paediatric First Aid certificate.
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English if required
