Nursery assistant apprenticeship

Job description
Ambourne House is a small family run nursery, located in South Gloucestershire and very close to Bristol. Ambourne House has been providing high quality childcare at their nursery since 1991.Now looking to recruit a creative and enthusiastic apprentice to join their team.

Purpose of post

  1. To provide a high standard of physical, emotional, social and intellectual care for children placed in the setting.
  2. To give support to other personnel within the setting.
  3. To implement the daily routine in the base room.

Key areas

  1. Work with children.
  2. Team work.
  3. Liaise with parents/carers.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Operate a programme of activities suitable to the age range of children in your area in conjunction with other staff.
  2. Work with parents/carers of all children to give full integration in the setting.
  3. Support all staff and engage in a good staff team.
  4. Liaise with and support parents/carers and other family members.
  5. To take part in out of working hours activities e.g. training, monthly staff meetings, charity days.
  6. To be flexible within the working practices of the setting. Be prepared to help where needed, including undertaking certain domestic jobs e.g. preparation of snack, cleaning duties, covering in other rooms etc.
  7. Work alongside the manager and the staff team to ensure that the philosophy behind the business is fulfilled.
  8. Recording accidents in the accident book. Ensure the Room Leader/Manager is aware of the report before the parent receives it.
  9. Look upon the setting at a “whole” where can your help most be utilised, be constantly aware of the needs of the children.
  10. Ensure children are only collected by someone known to the setting.
  11. Respect the confidentiality of any information received.
  12. Develop your role within the team especially with regard as a key worker.
  13. Ensure the setting of a high quality environment to meet the needs of individual children from differing cultures and religious backgrounds and stages of development.
  14. Be aware of the profile of the setting and uphold it’s standards at all times.
  15. Actively promote and support the safeguarding of children and young people in the workplace, ensuring setting policies and procedures are observed at all times.
  16. Specific childcare tasks
  17. The preparation and completion of activities to suit the child’s stage of development
  18. Washing and changing children as required
  19. Providing comfort and warmth to an ill child.
Entry requirements

A - C in Maths and English at GCSE Desirable. Otherwise willingness to complete Functional Skills within the apprenticeship to obtain these grades. 

A passion for a career in childcare, getting stuck in and being creative. 

Skills required
  • Previous experience of caring for, or working with children aged 0-5 in a voluntary or paid capacity would be advantageous 
  • A commitment to the provision of high quality childcare.
  • A positive approach to learning and gaining new skills through teamwork and training opportunities.

  • Good organisational, record keeping and planning skills.
  • Punctuality.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Patience.
  • Reliability and trustworthiness.
  • A positive approach to inclusive practice with children and colleagues.
  • Enthusiasm for working with young children.
Qualifications taken

Childcare Level 2 or 3 depending on previous experience. 
Functional skills in Maths and English if required.
