An apprenticeship is a real job with many employers thinking that apprentices are 15% more employable than those with other qualifications. As an apprentice you will join a company full of experienced people and work along side them, supporting them and learning from them as you go.

For many it really is personal preference. Some people enjoy education and therefore the idea of going to university after college for 3 years+ (sometimes more depending on the course and if they were to go on and do a masters!) excites them, whereas other people want to get stuck in right away, earn a wage and gain a qaulification at the same time – everyone is different! However we do understand you might be torn so with have listed below some key facts that might help make up your mind:
- Apprenticeships offer a great opportunity to complete a qualification that interests you, as well as developing on the job skills to further your career.
- Usually an apprenticeship will last anywhere between 12-18 months. This allows you the time to get your qualification as well as enough industry experienced needed for your End Point Assessment (the final part of your apprenticeship!)
- Apprenticeships start throughout the year, so there are always opportunities available unlike colleges or universities where enrolment tends to happen at one set point per year. Browse our current vacancies here
- After your apprenticeship is complete many employers will ask you to stay as you already know the ins and outs of the business – often this comes with a pay rise too and more responsibility!
- Unlike university, once your apprenticeship is complete you won’t have any form of student debt to pay back – a big bonus as the average student debt is now a staggering £36,000!

Each apprenticeship, depending on what area you choose will offer you a different-level of qualification on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) and because of this the entry requirements you will need may differ. Generally speaking the below is a good guide to follow:
- When applying for an intermediate or Level 2 apprenticeship, you’ll just need to be over 16 years old and no longer in full-time education.
- For an advanced apprenticeship or Level 3, you’re likely to be asked for prior work experience or at least three A*-C or 9-4 grade GCSEs or equivalent – such as an intermediate apprenticeship qualification.
- As higher apprenticeships or Level 4 are the equivalent of a foundation degree, HNC or first year of a Bachelors, you’ll usually need at least five A*-C or 9-4 grade GCSEs, as well as some Level 3 qualifications in relevant subjects, to apply. Your Level 3 qualifications could be AS-levels, a BTEC National or a Level 3 NVQ.
- Degree apprenticeships will have the tightest entry requirements. These may include three A-levels in a specified grade range or a higher apprenticeship qualification, on top of at least five A*-C or 9-4 GCSE grades. It’s likely you’ll be required to have prior work experience.
10 things that require zero talent
Some things don’t require any talent at all. If you can strive to achieve these 10 things, you’ll find yourself much more successful and desirable from employers and all of those around you.
1.) Being on time
It’s good to be punctual. It shows that you are committed to your work and can keep well to time management.
2.) Good work ethic
Having good work ethics not only help you but others around you. You’ll find people are more willing to help you if they feel you have a good work ethic.
3.) Effort
Adding effort to anything you do will show. This will make you feel good about yourself and proud about what you can achieve if you put your mind to it.
4.) Doing extra
Doing extra to help out those around you can help everyone, including you! It will encourage others to help you when you may need it and doing extra shows great commitments and a desire to strive for success.
5.) Passion
Being passionate about what you do if great. If you love what you do at work, it never really seems like work!
6.) Body language
Your body language shows a lot about your character. Straighten up your back, sit up in your chair, smile and radiate positive energy and the world will radiate back at you.
7.) Being coachable
Being open to new ideas and being taught new things expands your knowledge considerably. Allow people to show you other ways of doing things, even if you think the way you do them is flawless. You may learn new techniques and better see things from other peoples perspectives.
8.) Energy
The energy put into yourself and others help to create a great environment around you, always aim to give 110%.
9.) Being prepared
Being prepared means you are able to face any challenges you may be worried about, much more easily. This could be to be prepared for an interview, an important meeting, having to drive long distances and even when going on holiday.
10.) Attitude
Your attitude means everything, treat people how you would want to be treated. That old saying really is vital in your attitude and how you come across to other people. We all have our off days, but strive to still be polite and try your hardest.
