Functional skills coach

We are looking for an engaging and proactive Skills Coach to take responsibility for planning and delivery of an outstanding learner experience within additional learning support, Functional Skills and pastoral support.

Key responsibilities
  • To develop and deliver high quality teaching and learning which imparts knowledge, develops skills and builds learner confidence.
  • To undertake specialist diagnostics, where applicable, to ensure ALS is accurately identified.
  • To assist in sourcing appropriate resources and systems that facilitate achievement of learners
  • Support learners, on a one to one basis, within workshops and via Smart Sessions to achieve qualifications detailed within their individual learning plan.
  • To plan, deliver, monitor and evaluate pastoral support that is tailored to individual learner needs.
  • Fully engage learners and employers in the learning process
  • To maintain accurate, up to date records of all learner activities to ensure support can be evidenced during ESFA audit and Ofsted inspection
Key duties
  • To undertake diagnostic assessments with all learners to gain an understanding of SEN needs and training needs in English, maths and ICT.
  • To review and evaluate outcomes of diagnostic assessments and develop personalised individual support plans (ISPs) for each learner.
  • To manage a caseload of SEN and Functional Skills learners to ensure they have the appropriate support to complete all qualifications.
  • To develop and implement personalised session plans which ensure learners receive good quality teaching, learning and pastoral support.
  • To ensure all learning sessions facilitate sufficient and demonstrable learning and development opportunity
  • To ensure, where possible, that teaching and learning is contextualised to the occupational sector of the learner
  • To continuously monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of learning sessions to ensure they fully meet the needs of individual learners
  • To undertake, at least, monthly visits with all learners and provide written feedback following these sessions.
  • To support learners using a blended delivery model including one to one support, workshops and Smart
  • To research and make use of special facilities and/or equipment to remove barriers to learning
  • To check and assess learner work and provide good quality feedback that aids progression
  • To ensure Smart Assessor is updated routinely to demonstrate impact of visits and ensure compliance with company and external requirements.
  • To fully utilise Do-it-Profiler and BKSB to determine barriers to learning and develop skills of learners.
  • To work with Curriculum Manager to develop a wide range of resources to support learners with ALS and Functional Skills needs.
  • To ensure that ALS and Functional Skills referral processes are adhered to, in a timely manner.
  • To develop and deliver exam preparation activities that builds confidence and provide learners with the best chance of success.
  • To undertake exam invigilation, in-line with company policy, and ensure special measures are implemented for eligible learners with ALS learners
  • To ensure agreed KPIs are achieved, as detailed in Quality and Compliance report, and that suitable action is undertaken where issues are identified.
  • To maintain learner achievement levels as agreed with line manager
  • To contribute to the annual self-assessment report for ALS and Functional Skills provision
  • To develop and progress actions included within the Quality Improvement Plan

Personal Specification

Essential experience/knowledge

Working knowledge of supporting ALS and Functional Skills learners

A minimum of 12 months teach and/or support experience

Good IT skills

Good written and verbal communication skills
