Playwork Transition Award
Overview
Award in Transition to Playwork (Only available in Wales)
This qualification is based on the National Occupational Standards for playwork and will develop the knowledge needed for working in playwork settings and environments. It covers the theories, principles of both play and playwork, risk management and how to support the needs and rights of children to enable creation of diverse play environments.
Why choose to complete the award?
Nurseries and after school club settings need to have employees qualified in playwork by 2022, which will also broaden their knowledge and improve their CPD. Upon completion of the playwork award you will have gained the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to work effectively in playwork environments such as after-school clubs and holiday clubs.
The following Childcare Level 3 qualifications can transition into playwork:
- Level 3 Diploma in Children’s Care Learning and Development
- Level 3 Children’s Care Play Learning and Development: Practice
- Level 3 Diploma for Children and Young People’s Workforce
- Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Practitioner (Early Years Educator) or equivalent Level 3 Early Years Educator qualification
The playwork award consists of 2 units, 328 and 329. These are both assignments based and graded either pass, merit or distinction on completion.
Unit 328 understands the aspects of playwork practice. IT skills can be used to produce a presentation, report, leaflet
Unit 329 understands the theories underpinning playwork practice. IT skills can be used to produce a presentation, report, document or booklet.
How long does the award take to complete?
The award is delivered over 5 months with 3 remote workshop sessions to take place via Zoom, as set out below:
- Month 1 – Sign up takes place
- Month 2 – Workshop session-induction, teaching session unit 328
- Month 3 – Workshop session-submission unit 328, teaching session unit 329
- Month 4 – Workshop session-submission 329, tie up session
- Month 5 – Completion of portfolio for IQA
Learners will access resources on Smart Assessor so will need to have access via the internet.

Are sessions face to face?
No they are all run remotely
Can I resit assignments?
Yes, but you will not achieve higher than a pass grade.
Do I have to attend all sessions?
Yes they are mandatory to gain the knowledge to complete the tasks
Do I need to complete essential skills?
No, you do not need to have completed essential skills in order to complete this award.
How I complete my work and is there a deadline?
You will be given an assignment which will require you to devise reports and presentations etc. so IT skills would be an advantage and there will be a deadline for all assignments.
Is there any age restrictions?
Yes you have to be 18 or over
What if I have completed an older qualification that is not listed?
You will be eligible to complete the full diploma.
Will I have support between sessions?
Yes you will an assessor assigned to you who will support you throughout the course.
Will observations need to be carried out?
No but you will be expected to reflect in a play environment
