Leader in adult care
This apprenticeship is aimed at registered managers and deputy/assistant managers who lead a care team at a service or unit level either in the community or residential setting. They will motivate their teams to make positive changes in someone’s life when faced with physical, practical, social, emotional, psychological or intellectual challenges.
What is covered on this apprenticeship?
This course includes 18 units which is split into 11 mandatory units and 7 optional units. The mandatory units cover topics such as leadership and management in adult care, safeguarding, resource management,
decision making and person centred practice for positive outcomes. Some of the optional units cover managing recruitment and selection, managing end of life care and support, Leading and managing
dementia care services and mental health and wellbeing.
Learners without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this level prior to completion of their Apprenticeship. For those with an education, health and care plan or a legacy statement, the apprenticeships English and maths minimum requirement is Entry Level 3 and British Sign Language qualification are an alternative to English qualifications for whom this is their primary language
What are the course requirements?
All learners must undertake a DBS check and provide the result. An apprentice must be over 19 years in order to complete the diploma.
To ensure that the apprentice has the right skills, knowledge and behaviours to meet the requirements of the apprenticeship Standard ST008, there will be a requirement to complete a assessment and interview prior to sign up.
How is the apprenticeship delivered?
Aspiration Training provide a wide range of support measures to learners including bespoke online meeting tutorials as well as blended learning options – In which, learners can select computer-based study options such as home learning. Learners will be given access to our online e-portfolio system, Smart Assessor, to submit work and be given feedback from an allocated personal tutor who will mentor them throughout the qualification, and visit at the workplace to offer further support and guidance.
What qualification will be awarded?
Upon successful completion, you will be awarded
Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult C are Level 2 Functional Skills in English and/or maths (if applicable)
What is the assessment?
Apprentices will be entered for the final assessment when the employer, in consultation with the training provider, considers the apprentice has demonstrated the skills, knowledge/understanding and behaviours required of a competent worker in that sector. This would be based on a continuous review of the apprentice’s performance and progress.
The final assessment will contain an observation of the apprentice in the workplace and also a professional discussion (around 40 minutes).
Final EPA – via third party agreed with employer
The focus of the final assessment is on the apprentice being able to prove their competence in their role. The entails showing sufficiency of skills, knowledge and behaviours. The final assessment will begin around 3 months before the end of the apprenticeship.
Assessments and grading
Overall, the EPA consists of undertaking a
self-assessment in the last month of the apprenticeship. Gathering of a minimum of 2 testimonies from the people who use the services. Completion of an Multiple Choice exam (MCQ) and a professional discussion. Overall grades are given passed on the MCQ and PD assessment – Pass, Merit, Distinction.
What is the professional discussion?
This is a scenario-based discussion between the independent assessor and apprentice for approximately 40 minutes. The apprentice will read or watch a scenario which will prompt a two way dialogue question and answer session around this situation and what they would do in the circumstance. The apprentice will give evidence from examples from their own practice that they have met the required knowledge, skills and competencies.

What are my responsibilities as an employer to my apprentice?
There must be a genuine job available with a contract of employment long enough for an apprentice to complete their apprenticeship. You must pay an apprentice’s wages and the role must help them gain the knowledge, skills and behaviours they need to achieve the apprenticeship with support.
You will need to have:
- an apprenticeship agreement in place with their apprentice for the duration of the apprenticeship
- a commitment statement signed by the apprentice, yourself as the employer and us as the training provider
- for employers who pay the apprenticeship levy and use the apprenticeship service; you will need to have a contract for services in place which we can support with
- an apprenticeship in place for at least one year
- the apprentice on the correct wage for their age, for the time they are in work, in off-the-job training and doing further study
Can my existing staff start an apprenticeship?
Of course! Placing your existing staff on an apprenticeship is a great way of upskilling your employees and uncovering your future managers. It can be a great way of motivating and rewarding your staff by committing to their continued personal development within your business.
How does the apprentice learn?
Apprentices do most of their learning at work and benefit from regular contact with their dedicated assigned assessor. There is coursework to be completed while on the course, which is to be submitted online, however, the knowledge to complete this is provided while learning inside your business.
How much do I have to pay an apprentice?
Apprentices must be paid at least the national minimum wage for apprentices if they are aged 19 and under or aged 19 and over and in their first year of an apprenticeship.
Apprentices are often paid higher amounts as their skills develop and we encourage employers to do so

What is off-the-job training for apprentices?
Training that is delivered outside of their normal working duties.
The apprentice must receive off-the-job training for a minimum of 20% of the time that they are paid to work.
Off-the-job training is:
Learning completed outside of the normal day-to-day working environment and leads towards the achievement of the
apprenticeship directly relevant to the apprenticeship.
Off-the-job training can be:
The teaching of theory – for example lectures, role playing, simulations exercises or online learning. It can also be practical training – for example shadowing, mentoring and industry visits. As well as learning support and time spent writing assessments or assignments.
