Childcare Level 2 apprenticeship

Overview

The childcare level 2 apprenticeship is a recognised qualification for people who are working in childcare in a supporting role such as a nursery assistant or crèche worker. The work-based qualification enables you to develop your abilities and demonstrate your skills in your chosen setting. The childcare level 2 apprenticeship offers a combination of qualifications that will equip learners with the skills and knowledge required to work in the childcare industry and is ideal as a first role.

The childcare level 2 apprenticeship students will learn how to provide effective care and contribute to the social development and practical skills of children and young people. During their training, apprenticeship students will learn under the supervision of experienced childcare practitioners.

The main responsibilities of a student completing their childcare level 2 apprenticeship are focussed around educating and developing children – ensuring they are learning and having fun at the same time. You’ll be assisting your employer with learning plans and class observations, as well as helping prepare healthy, nutritious food for breakfast and snacks throughout the day.

The more formal responsibilities of a childcare level 2 apprenticeship include helping ensure your employer meets OFSTED requirements, undertaking First Aid training and ensuring that the business is Health and Hygiene compliant, whilst all of the time, following safeguarding rules and working within confidentiality guidelines.

During your apprenticeship you will be an employee of the business. It’s likely that you will work with various teams and other employees across the business, and you will always be working with a fully qualified member of staff, so it’s important to be a team-player.

The benefit of completing an apprenticeship is that you earn whilst you learn, you’ll gain real life work experience along with a recognised qualification at the end of it.

  • Level 2 diploma in children’s care, learning and development
  • Essential skills application of number – Level 1
  • Essential skills communication – Level 2

Who is the childcare level 2 apprenticeship suitable for?

The childcare level 2 apprenticeship is suitable for workers in a variety of settings which could include: early learning centre, pre-school, nursery or crèche, or a social care setting. You could have the opportunity to work with a variety of ages – children aged 0-19 years.

If you don’t have GCSE Maths and English at Grade 4+ then the childcare level 2 apprenticeship would be the best pathway for you. After your apprenticeship is complete, you would become qualified nursery nurse and may choose to progress to a Level 3 qualification. If you already hold your GCSE Maths and English qualifications, you may be able to start at Level 3 apprenticeship.

How long does it take?

The childcare level 2 apprenticeship takes 12 months to complete in England and 18 months to complete in Wales.

What childcare jobs could you get after completing your apprenticeship?

You will always have the option of carrying on with your education and may wish to complete a childcare level 3 apprenticeship, and even move onto degree level after that. There are many different jobs available in the childcare sector, for example a nursery nurse, room manager, nursery manager, childminding, care worker and youth support worker – the list is endless. After completing your apprenticeship you may know what age range you enjoy working with most, and could choose to work in an early learning centre, pre-school, nursery or crèche, or within a social care setting.

Can my existing staff start an apprenticeship?

How does the apprentice learn?

Apprentices do most of their learning at work and benefit from regular contact with their dedicated assigned assessor. There is coursework to be completed while on the course, which is to be submitted online, however, the knowledge to complete this is provided while learning inside your business.

How much do I have to pay an apprentice?

Apprentices must be paid at least the national minimum wage for apprentices if they are aged 19 and under or aged 19 and over and in their first year of an apprenticeship.

Apprentices are often paid higher amounts as their skills develop and we encourage employers to do so
