Level 3 Apprenticeship

Overview

Dental Nurses are professionals who provide clinical and other support to registrants and patients. As a Dental Nurse the individual will undertake aspects of patient care, ranging from sterilising and preparing instruments, mixing materials and learning the knowledge, skills and behaviours to work chairside, providing support to both the dental clinician and the patient. The integrated apprentice qualification covers all aspects of the clinical responsibilities and duties that are carried out by a Dental Nurse, and successfully completing the qualification will enable the learner to register with the General Dental Council.


What is covered on the course?

The apprentice will be expected to complete the 11 mandatory diploma units below:

  • Preparing for professional practice in dental nursing
  • Infection prevention and control
  • First aid and medical emergencies
  • Oral and general health
  • Endodontic treatments
  • Prosthetic treatments
  • Radiation and radiography
  • Periodontal disease and cavity restoration
  • Health and safety
  • Extractions and minor oral surgery
  • Management of oral health diseases and dental anatomy, oral health assessments and treatment planning


The individual will also work towards Functional Skills Level 2 in Maths and English, if applicable.

Course duration

18 months with up to 1 months EPA.

Entry requirements

The individual must be at least 16 years old and will be required to undertake a DBS check. They must be employed, working more than 16 hours per week and have good levels of literacy and numeracy.

End Point Assessment (EPA)

End Point Assessment is the period of time when all assessment decisions are validated.

Your grades are not final until confirmed at End Point Assessment. Once your evidence has been quality assured you will have direct liason with the General Dental Council when they will confirm your suitability for registration.

Qualifications

Upon successful completion of this apprenticeship, the apprentice will be awarded the following:

  • Level 3 Dental Nurse Apprenticeship Standard
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English level 1 or 2 (as appropriate)
