#SkillsForLife Forum during National Apprenticeship Week 2023
As a part of our celebrations of National Apprenticeship Week 2023, we were proud to host a #SkillsForLife Forum on Thursday 9th February with some of our employers, representatives from Awarding Organisations and apprentices of various sectors.
The Forum, which was hosted by Robin Walker, MP for Worcester and Chair of the Education Committee, and our CEO, Iain Salisbury, gave the opportunity for a debate to be held to discuss the challenges facing apprenticeships and how we can all come together to better improve people’s lives through education across all industries.
Robin Walker was clear that a focus of ensuring that apprenticeships were embedded into daily life across both private and public sectors was paramount to increasing the awareness, whilst also acknowledging that while there has been progress over the years in highlighting apprenticeships as a clear alternative to going to college/university, that the pandemic has had an effect on the numbers and the amount of people coming through the doors wanting an apprenticeships is something he can see will start to improve.
Other points of the discussion included the important of both Level 2 and 3 apprenticeships as well as degree apprenticeships, the barriers to apprenticeships people face due to their level of maths and English and the quality risk of not raising the price of apprenticeships in line with inflation.
The MP finished by saying that “One of the good things about apprenticeships is, there is a huge decree of consensus between all different parties about the importance of this (apprenticeships) with members who are really enthusiastic about the opportunities for people to access apprenticeships, to earn while they learn and progress in their chosen space and whatever happens in politics, there will be a continuous push for apprenticeships to be a key part of the system.”
