How to build skills: Time Management

Time management is an essential skill in any career, especially during an apprenticeship. Balancing learning, working, and developing new skills while focusing on deadlines can be challenging. Effective time management helps you stay organised, meet expectations, and reduce stress. To ensure that you have a smooth transition into your new work life, read the steps below:

1. Prioritising

Effective time management starts with learning to prioritise tasks based on the urgency and importance of the task. You can make a to-do list each day, or even use a day book to organise each day. Start each day by listing out your tasks and break them into much more manageable steps to avoid feeling overwhelmed. You can also try to Identify the higher impact tasks first. This means you should look for the tasks that will add the most value to your learning and to your team’s objectives, and tackle them first.

2. Planning and scheduling

A great way to plan and schedule your work is by using your calendar. You can block out time for each task, including breaks, which means you have your tasks pre-planned and you won't miss anything out. Allocating specific time slots will also allow you to stay focused and decrease procrastination, if you are strict with these time frames

3. Managing your distractions

There may be many distractions that can result in a decrease in productivity. This can be social media, office chatter and many more. If you learn how to minimise these, you will be more effective in controlling your time. The first thing you can do is turn off notifications on your mobile device - more for when you are working on critical tasks. To stay focused, you can try to make sure that you have a dedicated workspace free of distractions- whether working in an office or at home.

4. Tracking progress and reflecting

The last step that will help you is regularly reviewing your time management and progress to ensure that you are continuously improving. This means keeping track of deadlines, which you can do by checking your calendar or using software like Monday. At the end of each day, you can review what has went well and what can be improved, which is a great way to reflect on your work.

Mastering time management isn't easy. As you navigate your work life, use these tips and it will come with time. Not only will this skill benefit you on an apprenticeship journey, but it would also benefit you throughout your career. If you are interested in using these tips as an apprentice, apply for an apprenticeship today by clicking here.
