Kickstart Scheme

To help prevent mass unemployment, yesterday the Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced a new £2 billion ‘Kickstart scheme’. The aim is to create more jobs for the younger generation. Under the new scheme, the government will cover the cost of 25 hours’ work into traineeships for young people aged between 18 and 24 as part of plans to kick-start the economy following COVID-19. Businesses in England offering traineeships will receive £1000 per trainee under the new scheme. The government is expecting to provide 30,000 new traineeships for young people in England. The aim is to get young people into work, who are believed to have been particularly hard hit by coronavirus  Government figures show that workers under 25 are 2.5 times more likely to work in a sector that has been shut down. The scheme is expected to be in place from the start of August 2020.

“It was great to see the Chancellor recognise the important role traineeships play in supporting young people back into work this week when he announced additional programme funding and incentives for employers. Traineeships are a vital link for young people between school and their first job. Sadly too many young people find themselves applying for jobs that require experience and feel trapped because they need a job to gain the experience“.

Traineeship Programme

The traineeship programme supports young people to build their confidence and prepare them for the world of work, as well as develop vital skills such as English and math. Traineeships are a supportive environment, which many young people find to be far better suited to them than they found in schools. The key part of traineeships is a work placement where young people can further develop their skills and gain vital experience.

The chancellor announced both additional funding to give more people access to the programme and for the first time recognised the important role employers play in providing the work experience by giving them a grant of £1000 for providing a work experience placement. At Aspiration Training we see over three-quarters of young people go on to a permanent job and often an Apprenticeship after they complete their Traineeship. So we know this programme really works and we look forward to being able to support many more young people in Birmingham to find their ideal job through traineeships. “
